DUMBO, Brooklyn. An NYC Travel Guide

Hi, I’m Rob, and I manage Khonsu, a New York–based travel service that pairs you with local Experience Designers who create custom travel guides to help you make the most of your time in the city. In this guide, we’re exploring DUMBO, Brooklyn — a neighborhood that’s on nearly every visitor’s wish list and often compared with nearby Manhattan, leading many travelers to search for it as “DUMBO Manhattan.” This vibrant district is filled with cobblestone streets, world-class art, and sweeping waterfront views that set it apart as one of New York City’s most photogenic and creative areas.

Here’s a curated guide to iconic sights, hidden gems, and some of the best spots to eat and shop. Whether you’re drawn by the industrial history, the thriving food scene, or the irresistible skyline views that rival any in Manhattan, exploring DUMBO Manhattan gives you a perfect mix of culture and charm right on the Brooklyn waterfront.

Getting to DUMBO from Manhattan

You have a few options to get to DUMBO:

  • Subway: Take the train to York Street.

  • Walk: Stroll across the Brooklyn Bridge for iconic views.

  • Ferry (Recommended): The NYC Ferry costs only $4.50 and offers spectacular views of the Manhattan skyline at a fraction of a tourist boat’s price. It’s the perfect way to start your adventure.

Washington & Water

Iconic Photo Spot: Washington & Water Streets

This is the most famous Instagrammable spot in DUMBO — the Manhattan Bridge perfectly framed by red-brick warehouses. It’s usually crowded, so arrive early (around 7 a.m.) if you want the shot without the crowds. For something truly magical, visit during winter after a snowfall.

Hidden Gem: Gleason’s Gym

Fitness fans will love this one. Gleason’s Gym, America’s oldest boxing gym, originally opened in the Bronx before relocating to DUMBO. Legends like Muhammad Ali, Mike Tyson, and Roberto Durán trained here. Even if you don’t step inside, it’s worth a photo stop.

Iconic Spot: Pebble Beach in Brooklyn Bridge Park

Brooklyn Bridge Park transformed DUMBO’s waterfront into a beautiful green space. Pebble Beach isn’t for swimming, but it’s a great vantage point for Manhattan views, wedding photos, and even live performances on weekends.

What’s In The Name DUMBO?

The name has nothing to do with elephants! DUMBO stands for Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass. Once an industrial hub, the area was redeveloped into the artsy, upscale neighborhood it is today.

Jane’s Carousel

This beautifully restored carousel was originally built in 1922 in Ohio before being purchased and brought to Brooklyn. It’s a beloved attraction for kids and adults alike — and rides are just $2. The carousel’s glass pavilion makes it a striking feature of the DUMBO waterfront.

Shopping in DUMBO

  • Empire Stores: A historic warehouse complex, though shopping here can feel a bit limited.

  • Kith Kids: For trendy New York streetwear, but it’s more brand-driven than unique.

  • Vesta Kloset: A standout local boutique owned by artist Face, offering one-of-a-kind pieces.

  • Brooklyn Flea: Held on weekends under the archway, it’s perfect for vintage finds and New York memorabilia, often with live music.

  • Powerhouse Books: An independent bookstore specializing in art and photography. A must-visit for unique New York souvenirs.

Where to Eat in DUMBO

  • %Arabica Coffee: Minimalist design meets excellent coffee — a must for caffeine lovers.

  • Juliana’s Pizza: Classic New York pizza, but expect long lines on weekends.

  • Timeout Market: A food hall with a curated selection of NYC’s best eats, though prices can be high.

  • Sugar Hill Creamery: A Harlem-born, Black-owned ice cream shop with creative seasonal flavors.

  • Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory: Known for fresh, handmade classics with unbeatable bridge views.

  • Van Leeuwen: A solid option for dairy-free ice cream.

Pro tip: Compare Sugar Hill Creamery and Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory — one wins for creative flavors, the other for pure quality.

Walk Brooklyn Bridge

Walk Back Across the Brooklyn Bridge

End your visit with a walk back into Manhattan over the Brooklyn Bridge. The 30-minute stroll is the perfect way to take in the skyline and burn off some ice cream calories.
