Beginning at the end of October, The Rink at Rockefeller Center invites visitors to share a moment with the bronze gilded statue of the Greek legend Prometheus. Notably, The Rink opened on Christmas Day in 1936 with initial plans for temporary existence, has proven its enduring charm over time, establishing itself as a highly sought-after activity in New York, particularly during the holiday season.

Bryant Park Winter Village

For a convenient combination of dining, shopping, and ice-skating, Bryant Park's Bank of America Winter Village is a top choice. The 17,000-square-foot outdoor rink, scheduled to open on October 27th, 2023, offers late hours and free access, though skate rentals are available. The location creates a winter wonderland ambiance, perfect for a post-skating warm-up with a cup of hot chocolate at the Max Brenner kiosk nearby. It's a one-stop destination for travelers looking to make the most of their time in NYC during the chilly season.

Tickets: Admission to the rink itself is free. Skate rentals can cost anywhere from $18 - $55 depending on the date. Lockers are included but not locks, you can either bring your own lock or purchase one onsite.

Wollman Rink in Central Park

Beyond its fantastic skating experience and iconic vistas, Wollman Rink in Central Park boasts a side-rink cafe opening its doors for the season on October 28th. This cozy spot offers a variety of treats, including hot dogs (even vegan ones!), burgers, tacos, grilled cheese sandwiches, and more. Sky Rink at Chelsea Piers

Visiting during the off-season? You can still experience year-round ice skating at Sky Rink in Chelsea Piers, where two NHL-size rinks are open for general skating, hockey, and figure skating. Unlike typical indoor ice arenas, this megacomplex doesn't feel confined; generous windows provide sweeping views of the Hudson River to the west. Visitors can also enjoy the flexibility to book a freestyle skate session, easily accessible through the Piers' online booking platform.

The Rink at Brookfield Place

Positioned on the plaza in front of the former World Financial Center Winter Garden, now known as Brookfield Place Winter Garden, The Rink at Brookfield Place offers a welcome cold-weather activity in this popular outdoor area with views of the North Cove Marina. Spanning 7,350 square feet, it surpasses the size of the Rink at Rockefeller Plaza. Travelers seeking an expansive ice skating experience can enjoy this larger rink while taking in the picturesque surroundings. This is also a great place to get some holiday shopping done while checking out Brookfield's high-class Christmas decorations.

Ice Rink at The Seaport

This year, the Ice Rink at The Seaport is making a comeback with Winterland at the Seaport District. Positioned between Piers 16 and 17, the rink welcomes visitors with free admission, festive music, and a captivating light art installation, alongside other seasonal activities. While the festive cabins at Pier 17 won't be part of the scene this time, Winterland promises an exciting holiday atmosphere (and Brooklyn Bridge view) for everyone who visits.

Abe Stark Rink

Abe Stark Rink continues to be a popular seaside destination, attracting visitors even after the closure of Coney Island's theme parks for the season. With a 40-year history, the venue initially operated as the Ravenhall Baths, a renowned saltwater swimming pool during Coney Island's heyday. After an unfortunate fire in 1963, the space underwent a transformation into a haven for winter recreation enthusiasts. Skating admission is $10, and there is an extra $5 fee for skate rentals at this authentically retro indoor rink.

Riverbank State Park Ice Skating Rink

The Riverbank State Park Ice Skating Rink welcomes the public on Fridays through Sundays, featuring a roof to keep skaters dry from December snows and April showers. Located atop Riverbank State Park, it offers pleasant views of the Hudson River and the iconic George Washington Bridge. Governor’s Island Winter Village

Now on it's third year running, the Governors Island Winter Village hosts an expansive 7,500-square-foot skating rink, making it an extra appealing destination for a ferry ride during a winter visit to NY. The rink is open to all ages and comes with various winter activities, festive decorations, games, seasonal treats, and inviting fire pits. The island's ample space allows for additional attractions, including bike and sled rentals, winter games, and cultural programming, all against the backdrop of holiday lights at the historic Colonels Row.

Glide at Brooklyn Bridge Park

On November 15, 2023, Glide at Brooklyn Bridge Park opened at Emily Warren Roebling Plaza, right under the Brooklyn Bridge. It quickly became a go-to destination for both tourists and locals. A perfect addition to a chilly winter day in DUMBO, it's a short walk from other attractions like Time Out Market, Jacques Torres Chocolate, and the cobblestone intersection with the famous Manhattan Bridge backdrop. If you prefer to stay in the park, there's a rink-side cafe offering various food and drink options from local vendors.

Rudolph’s Rink at Coney Island’s Frost Fest

Rudolph’s Rink is an eco-friendly outdoor skating rink in Luna Park, Coney Island, as part of the park’s first-ever Frost Fest, a holiday event running until January 7th. 

The fest features 20 classic rides, including the Cyclone, carnival games, Christmas carolers, photos with Santa, and a holiday market. Set against the backdrop of Luna Park's roller coasters and lively carnival atmosphere, Rudolph’s Rink offers a unique winter experience you won't find anywhere else in NYC.

IC Ice Rink

In the heart of Brooklyn's revitalized Industry City, the IC Ice Rink provides a winter escape at the former Bush Terminal. During the Christmas season, this waterfront complex, home to artists and artisans, transforms into a winter wonderland with outdoor ice skating (plus a rink-side bar), heated courtyards, and festive holiday shopping. 

If you're willing to take a half-hour subway or ferry ride from midtown, you can trade the chilly bustle of the city for a charming, low-key, and comfortable skating experience under twinkling lights. Just a heads-up, the rink is uncovered, so make sure to dress warmly for a comfortable time on the ice.
